The Tree of Life
The Tree of Life is the symbol of RIC. The branches, symbolizing the eight disciplines of comprehensive total rehabilitation medicine, nourish and support the tree which is the patient.
Each individual branch represents:
Speech pathology
Occupational therapy
Physical therapy
Psychology
Social work
Nurse therapy
Therapeutic recreation
Vocational counseling
Faith is the underlying strength which nourishes the tree.
This is the original meaning of the Tree of Life. Over the last 20 years, additional meaning has been added: the branches do not have all six leaves, signifying that there are areas of life in which an individual can work and achieve goals. The center of the tree is the heart of the individual; the trunk is the faith and personality.
According to the designer, Morton Goldsholl, “The tree of life is symbolic of strength, growth and survival. From early days man used the tree to signify his belief in the continuance of life. The tree through the changing seasons adapts and grows, reminding man of the organic nature of the world.”
